About

LUCIE GLEDHILL

I work with precious metals, predominantly wire. Favouring techniques such as weaving wire and making chain, both repetitive processes that require a sedentary making stance similar to working with textiles.

I deliberately use a low-tech approach to making and often apply myself to the miniature world, where making is done whilst holding my breath, in complete silence.

I am a chain maker and whilst chain is what I make it is also the subject of my work. I use chain as a way to explore materiality and material relationships.

Recent collaboration SWAP with Kasia Wozniak - artist photographer allowed me to explore silver in a molecular way. By dissolving silver in nitric acid we have been exploring our shared material.

As well as making jewellery collections I also make sculpture. Recent award Jerwood Makers Open 2019 allowed me to take my sculptural work into a new and ambitious scale. Chain is currently on display at Manchester Art Gallery and will tour until 2021.

I am very excited to announce that I have been selected for a career catalyst grant from the Goldsmiths Company. The funding period is between 2020 - 2021 during which I will recieve virtual mentoring from the renowned Italian artist-jeweller Giovanni Corvaja.

I am co-founder of Made By Ore teaching studio which offers technical workshops to young people and adults in east London www.MADEBYORE.com
